Walking into your first adult ballet class is exciting—but also a little nerve-wracking. The good news? Most people feel exactly the same way. Here’s what actually happens and what you need to feel prepared (and comfortable).
What to Wear
You don’t need a leotard or tutu—unless you want to!
Wear:
- Leggings or comfortable fitted bottoms
- A tank top or T-shirt
- Soft ballet shoes if you have them or socks for your first class
- Hair secured out of your face
Comfort and mobility are the priorities.
What Class Will Look Like
Most adult classes follow this structure:
1. Warmup at the Barre
You’ll start with simple exercises like pliés, tendus, and gentle stretches. The teacher will explain each step, and everyone works at their own pace.
2. Center Work
Exercises move away from the barre to practice balance, posture, and simple steps. Expect manageable combinations and plenty of repetition.
3. Across-the-Floor Movement
You may try small jumps, turns, or traveling steps—adapted for beginners.
4. Cooldown
A few minutes to stretch, breathe, and relax.
What You Won’t Need to Worry About
- Being “behind” (everyone is focused on themselves)
- Looking silly (everybody is learning!)
- Being judged (adult classes are supportive and patient)
